Kinesiology Taping in Glendale, AZ
Kinesiology taping uses a thin, stretchy cotton tape applied to the skin over a sore or injured area. You may know it as kinesiotaping, KT tape or Kinesio® tape. At Muscle Chiropractic in Glendale, AZ, Dr. Tim Ballitch often uses kinesiology tape as one part of care after an exam. It supports the rest of your plan rather than replacing it.

What is kinesiology tape?
Kinesiology tape is an elastic tape that stretches with your skin. Unlike rigid athletic tape, it doesn’t lock a joint in place, so you can move, train and work while wearing it. Dr. Tim chooses the direction, stretch and placement of the strips based on the area he’s treating and what your exam showed.
How Dr. Tim may use it
After your exam, Dr. Tim may suggest taping for areas such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, low back, hip, knee, ankle or foot. People often describe the tape as making an area feel more supported or easier to move. It is usually combined with other care, such as:
- Corrective exercise to build strength and control
- Manual muscle release or IASTM (scraping) and cupping
- Chiropractic and extremity adjustments when they fit your exam
Not every patient is taped, and taping isn’t used at every visit.
What the research shows
- A 2023 meta-analysis found kinesiology taping reduced pain and disability in a range of musculoskeletal problems and supported its use alongside other treatments (Res Sports Med, 2023).
- When kinesiology tape is compared with sham (fake) taping, however, the benefit is less clear. A 2019 review rated the evidence for tape alone in low back pain and knee osteoarthritis as inconclusive and low quality (Physiotherapy, 2019).
In short, the tape may help some people feel and move better for a while, especially combined with exercise, but it is not a stand-alone fix. Claims that it repairs tissue or dramatically boosts circulation aren’t well supported. Results vary from person to person.
Wearing your tape safely
- Tell Dr. Tim about any skin allergies, adhesive sensitivity or fragile skin before taping.
- Take the tape off if your skin itches, burns, blisters or turns red, or if you notice new numbness or swelling.
- Tape isn’t applied over cuts, open wounds, infections or areas of skin irritation.
- Dr. Tim will tell you how long to wear it and how to remove it gently.
When to get medical care first
Taping isn’t a substitute for medical care. Get prompt medical attention for a joint you can’t bear weight on or use after an injury, a deformed joint, rapidly increasing swelling, or new numbness or weakness. Dr. Tim will refer you when another provider is the better next step.
Common questions
Can I shower or exercise with the tape on?
Kinesiology tape is designed to tolerate movement, sweat and showering. Pat it dry afterward. Dr. Tim will give you instructions for your application.
Can I tape myself at home?
Store-bought tape is widely available, but placement matters. If you’d like to tape at home, ask Dr. Tim to show you how for your situation.
Does taping cost extra?
No. When it’s appropriate, kinesiology taping is included in your New Patient or Existing Patient chiropractic visit, with no additional fee. Not every patient needs taping.
Can I ask for taping?
