Y-Strap Adjustments in Glendale, AZ

A Y-strap adjustment is an axial pull: one quick, controlled pull along the length of your spine, done without twisting your neck. At Muscle Chiropractic in Glendale, AZ, Dr. Tim Ballitch uses it for some patients, most often for a stiff neck that won’t turn well. It isn’t right for everyone, so Dr. Tim examines you first and decides at your visit whether it fits.

What is a Y-strap adjustment?

You lie on your back while a padded, Y-shaped strap cradles the base of your skull. Dr. Tim holds the handle, takes up the slack, then gives one quick, controlled pull along the long axis of your neck and spine. That’s why it’s also called an axial pull or axial distraction adjustment. Because the pull is straight, your neck isn’t rotated. You may hear a pop from the joints; that’s normal and isn’t bones “going back into place.”

Dr. Tim uses a purpose-built Y-strap device for this axial pull. Some practitioners do a similar pull with a towel or other equipment. You may also see the name Ring Dinger®, a trademarked technique developed by another chiropractor that uses its own setup; it is not the same as a Y-strap adjustment, and Muscle Chiropractic is not affiliated with it.

A Y-strap is not spinal decompression

Spinal decompression usually means a motorized table that pulls slowly and repeatedly over a session. A Y-strap adjustment is a single quick pull done by hand. Muscle Chiropractic does not have a spinal decompression table.

Examination first

Dr. Tim takes your history and examines you before deciding whether a Y-strap adjustment fits your situation. When it does, it’s usually one part of a visit that may also include other adjustments, soft tissue work and exercises. When it doesn’t, he’ll explain other options, such as ProAdjuster.

What the research shows

We aren’t aware of quality studies that test the Y-strap itself. Research on spinal manipulation for neck pain looks at manipulation in general, and results vary from person to person. No result is guaranteed.
